Roadway and Paving Projects
Roadway and paving design involves many engineering considerations. Typically, the expected traffic conditions are analyzed to determine the number of lanes and type of thoroughfare necessary to provide drivers the correct level of service. This involves understanding traffic patterns and when and where peak conditions occur.
Preliminary design involves the engineer producing a roadway alignment for review by the municipality or developer. Existing landscape, soil quality, and storm water conveyance are major characteristics evaluated during this stage of roadway and paving design.
Final design produces construction plans and specifications meeting standards for material strength and selection, stopping sight distance, minimum and maximum grades including cross slope, accessibility and aesthetics. The design engineer also provides bidding assistance during preconstruction activities.
